Photovoltaic (PV) Testing

MET has a 120kW solar array consisting of 476 panels at our headquarters in Baltimore. This is one of the largest commercial PV installations in Baltimore and the environmental benefits of it is dramatic – it will have the equivalent effect of planting 4,300 trees every year or replacing 54 average cars with hybrids.

MET is one of just a handful of labs that can test to all requirements of UL1703:

UL1703 – Safety of Flat-Plate Photovoltaic Modules and Panels

  • Flame Spread Test
  • Hot-Spot Endurance Test
  • Temperature Test
  • Voltage, Current and Power Measurements Test
  • Leakage Current Test
  • Strain Relief Test
  • Push Test
  • Cut Test
  • Bonding Path Resistance Test
  • Dielectric Voltage-Withstand Test
  • Wet Insulation-Resistance Test
  • Reverse Current Overload Test
  • Terminal Torque Test
  • Impact Test
  • Burning Brand Test
  • Water Spray Test
  • Accelerated Aging Test
  • Temperature Cycling Test
  • Humidity Test
  • Corrosive Atmosphere Test
    • Salt Spray
    • Moist Carbon Dioxide/Sulphur Dioxide
  • Metallic Coating Thickness Test
  • Mechanical Loading Test
  • Wiring Compartment Securement Test

MET also tests to these solar and PV standards:

IEC 61215
– Crystalline Silicon Terrestrial Photovoltaic (PV) Modules – Design Qualification and Type Approval

IEC 61646 – Thin-Film Terrestrial Photovoltaic (PV) Modules – Design Qualification and Type Approval

IEC 61730-2 – Photovoltaic Module Safety Qualification, Part 2

As part of some of these standards, MET does 85°C/85%RH (relative humidity) testing, utilizing walk-in chambers. 85/85 is the standard test for service life assessment of photovoltaic modules cited in IEC and UL standards. MET can test to any time duration as specified by the client.
